How to remove dirt & grime on cast iron skillet?

I'm trying to remove the grime on my cast iron skillets. On some website, it says do not use scouring pad but on others, it says use scouring pad. I am now using a scouring pad and can see some white spots on the skillet. Am I hurting the skillet? What is the best way to clean and season it.?
