Is the reason people fear their religion being disproven this?

churches have evolved into a social gathering, what with youth groups and all now days, people seem to go there to gossip and eat and mainly spend time with others they are familiar with, they form a close knit circle of people who will back them up but who they also feel they have to compete with and one up, is the reason the modern person fears their religion being disproven because they feel this way of life would erode if they knew their beliefs were not backed by science or history? i mean ask the average 16 -25 year old in church,(excluding the occasional fanatic like my cousin) they don't know half of what their religion is about, but they still show up anyways, and if they are fanatic then they do so because of a need to feel a part of a solid family and the need to shine in said family, or they just feel they have to do the best they can, sure they will disguise it with things like I'm doing god's work, but sub-consciously we are all motivated by base desires....
