Would a Korean mind it if I asked them if they were Korean??(In America)?

I was at the store today and I saw a Korean family and I know because they were speaking it (I'm a Korean fanatic..). I kinda wanted to say something but my mom acted like it would be rude. Would they mind it? It would be appreciated if the answerer were Korean.
