What is the rank for a U.S. Navy Air Officer, and what is the career path to achieve this billet?

I know that the Air Officer, also known as the Air Boss, (along with his assistant, the Miniboss) is responsible for all aspects of operations involving aircraft including the hangar deck, the flight deck, and airborne aircraft out to 5 nautical miles from the carrier. I was wondering what the typical rank of an U.S. Navy Air Officer aboard a U.S. Aircraft Carrier is, and how one would achieve that billet.
